When Can You Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan in New York?
Miss your enrollment window and you could face permanent late penalties — or a gap in coverage that costs you out of pocket. We review your specific dates before any enrollment step is taken, so you know exactly when to move and why.
Your Enrollment Window Depends on Your Situation
There is no single Medicare Advantage enrollment period that applies to everyone. Which window is open to you depends on your age, your current coverage, your employment status, and whether your plan or service area has changed. Here is every window you need to know.

Initial Enrollment Period
Your 7-month window to enroll in Medicare
This is the window that opens when you first become eligible for Medicare — it spans the three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month itself, and three months after. If you enroll during the first three months of this window, your coverage starts the first of the month you turn 65. Enroll later in the window and your start date shifts. Missing this period entirely without qualifying coverage in place can trigger permanent late enrollment penalties.
If you are turning 65 soon, see our full guide for people turning 65 for a step-by-step breakdown of what to do first.
Annual Election Period (AEP)
October 15 – December 7, effective January 1
This is the enrollment window most people associate with Medicare. Every fall, current Medicare beneficiaries can switch Medicare Advantage plans, move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or return to Original Medicare with or without a Part D drug plan. Changes made during AEP take effect January 1 of the following year. This is also the period we hold the majority of our community seminars — because it is when most people need clear, unbiased guidance most urgently.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
January 1 – March 31
If you enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and it is not working for you, this window gives you one opportunity each year to make a change. You can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare. Coverage under the new plan begins the first of the month after your request is processed. This period exists specifically for people who made a choice during AEP and need to revisit it — no penalty, no gap.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
Qualifying life events that open enrollment outside the standard windows
Certain events trigger a Special Enrollment Period that lets you enroll in or change a Medicare Advantage plan outside of AEP. Common qualifying events include:
- Losing employer-sponsored or union coverage
- Moving out of your plan's service area
- Your plan leaving the Medicare program
- Becoming eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid
- Relocating to a new state or coverage region
If you recently lost job-based coverage, you do not have to wait until October. A Special Enrollment Period opens immediately — and acting quickly is how you avoid a gap. Call us and we will confirm your eligibility and timeline the same day.
If you are still working past 65 and coordinating Medicare with employer coverage, our working past 65 guide covers that scenario in full.

Which Enrollment Window Applies to You?
Use this as a starting point. We will confirm the specifics when we talk.
- Turning 65 in the next six months: Your Initial Enrollment Period is either open or opening soon. Timing your enrollment correctly affects your start date and avoids late penalties.
- Already on Medicare and unhappy with your plan: If it is January through March, the Open Enrollment Period is available now. If it is October through December, AEP is your window. Outside those periods, we review whether a Special Enrollment Period applies.
- Lost employer coverage recently: You likely qualify for a Special Enrollment Period right now. Do not wait for October.
- Moved or your plan exited your area: A Special Enrollment Period is almost certainly available. Contact us before your coverage lapses.
- Helping an aging parent sort this out: We work with adult children navigating this on behalf of a parent every day. One conversation is usually enough to clarify the path forward.
A Note on Switching from Medicare Advantage to a Supplement Plan
One question we hear often: "Can I switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Medigap supplement plan after I've already enrolled?"
New York has continuous Medigap open enrollment — meaning New York residents can apply for a Medicare Supplement plan at any time of year, regardless of health status. This is a significant protection that does not exist in most other states. If you enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and are now considering a supplement, that option is more accessible here than you may have been told. We can walk you through what the comparison looks like for your specific situation.
Enrollment Questions We Hear Every Day

New York's most significant protection is continuous Medigap open enrollment.
